Locking Assembly for Solution of

Extreme Load in Flywheel

of Motor - Generator

Introduction

In this article, we will have a brief look at NMTG Locking Assembly solution against failure of equipments due to High Speed & Extreme Load condition in #Flywheel of #Generator Application.

Problem

  • One of the Reputed Indian Industry who is the manufacturer & supplier of Electric Motor & Generator have jamming issue in Shaft & Flywheel Connection So, removal is very difficult and they have only option to torch-cut the assembly for removal. So, their concern person contacted NMTG team for Solution.
  • NMTG Engineer has immediately visited site & found that customer is using #Shrinkfit connection by Heating method for Shaft-Flywheel Connection.

  • Location: Connection between Shaft & Flywheel in Motor-Generator Application
  • Max. Shaft dia.: 300 mm
  • Max. Flywheel Outer dia.: 2000 mm
  • Max. Flywheel Weight: 2345 kg
  • Max. Motor Power : 5.2 MW
  • Max. Flywheel Runaway Speed: 2250 RPM

Solution

  • It is very challenging task for NMTG team to provide Shrink-fit Solution in such Critical Application where Flywheel having around 2 tonnes of weight running around 2000 RPM & also available width is very low.
  • NMTG Technical Team accepted this challenge & decided to provide Temporary Keyless Shrink fit #LockingAssembly Solution for this Application:
    1. NMTG Technical Team with help of Technical Advisor has made Technical Questionnaire for this Application & asked Customer to provide all required technical details.
    2. We have identified critical Design parameters for their specific application & modified our product accordingly. Simultaneously Simulation of Equivalent system has also been performed.
    3. So by concluding Analytical approach & Simulation, we have designed Special Locking Assembly for this Application & Supplied to Customer for Testing & Validating NMTG Product at their end before supplying to end customer.

Conclusion

  • The first trial of NMTG Locking Assembly at Run-away Speed at the Customer site, in the presence of NMTG service engineer was carried out successfully & found satisfactory.
  • By following proper guidelines mentioned in NMTG Installation & Maintenance manual for Locking Assembly, Proper Installation & Desired output can be achieved without Slippage & Locking Assembly can also be removed easily by simply Un-tightening screws.
  • So, NMTG Provides Backlash free Temporary Shrink fit Keyless Solution in Critical Application & Eliminate Jamming as well as Slippage Issues.
  • After this Remarkable Solution, Customer has decided to Completely Eliminate Shrink Fit Connection by Heating & Adopt NMTG Keyless Solution for all further Projects.
